At Malkani Hair Restoration Institute our goal is to look after your hair loss and provide non-surgical treatments to prevent further hair loss. Our hair restoration clinic is in Harley Street, London.
We see it as a project rather than 1 or 2 treatment episodes.
We will only carry out surgery if we feel you will benefit and offer all patients a cooling off period. We also provide a number of complimentary non-surgical hair loss treatments which can be taken in addition to or instead of having surgery.
The role of DHT in male pattern hair loss
Because DHT makes hair follicles shrink and ultimately lost permanently, using a DHT blocker stops this from happening, which lets the hair follicles grow back to their normal size.
There are 2 DHT blockers at this time and moment. One is a prescription medication, and the other is a herbal DHT blocker given without a prescription but with much lower efficiency.
Hair loss tablets which act as DHT blockers (given on prescription and after a consultation)
DHT blockers are a tablet that you take every day. It’s thought to work by stopping DHT. DHT on the body gradually makes the hair follicles weaker until they permanently die resulting in male pattern hair loss.
Do DHT blockers or hair loss medication tablets work?
Yes they do work in restoring hair in the vast majority of cases. There have been studies that have indicated that using these hair loss tablets which act as DHT blockers increase the number of hairs as well as improving the appearance of your existing hair. Thinning hair regains strength and looks normal as well as making further hair loss stop. We notice that hair becomes stronger and thicker in diameter.
Hair loss medication tablets take time to work, nor they can regrow permanently lost hair.
It can take from three to six months before you’ll see any effect from using it and it has to be taken every day or every other day depending upon your prescription.
You’ll need to use it long term too because if you stop using it, the balding process tends to start again within six months to a year. However Dr Malkani can advise you on the best treatment plan for this especially if you have been on this medication for a while. Your dose will need to be adjusted or lowered in some cases so that you can maintain the benefits of this medication. Propecia is a prescription tablet with potential side effects like any other medication. All side effects are temporary and for a small number of patients. These stop upon discontinuing these tablets. These will all be discussed with you during your consultation so that you can make the right informed decision. Propecia seems to be more effective in restoring lost hair on the crown hair.

Regaine is the name of a minoxidil-based lotion that you rub into your scalp every day. It helps stabilise further hair loss but is not as potent as the hair loss tablets which act as DHT blockers. In some cases, it seems to stop working after about 2 years of using it.
Minoxidil is an old anti-hypertensive medication and works by increasing blood flow to the scalp.
