At Malkani Hair Restoration Institute our goal is to look after your hair loss and provide non-surgical treatments to prevent further hair loss. Our clinic is based in the heart of Harley Street, London.
We see it as a project rather than 1 or 2 treatment episodes.
We will only carry out surgery if we feel you will benefit and offer all patients a cooling off period. We also provide a number of complimentary non-surgical hair loss treatments which can be taken in addition to or instead of having surgery.
The role of DHT in male pattern hair loss
Because DHT makes hair follicles shrink and ultimately lost permanently, using a DHT blocker stops this from happening, which lets the hair follicles grow back to their normal size.
There are 2 DHT blockers at this time and moment. One is a prescription medication, and the other is a herbal DHT blocker given without a prescription but with much lower efficiency.
Hair loss tablets which act as DHT blockers (given on prescription and after a consultation)
Propecia is a tablet that you take every day. It’s thought to work by stopping DHT. DHT, in turn, causes the death of follicles resulting in male pattern hair loss.
There have been studies that have indicated that using these hair loss tablets which act as DHT blockers increases the number of hairs as well as improving the appearance of your existing hair. Thinning hair regains strength and looks normal as well as making further hair loss stop.
Propecia isn’t a quick fix, nor it can regrow permanently lost hair - it can take from three to six months before you’ll see any effect from using it and it has to be taken every day. You’ll need to use it long term too because if you stop using it, the balding process tends to start again within six months to a year. Propecia is a prescription tablet with potential side effects like any other medication. This will all be discussed with you during your consultation so that you can make the right decision. Propecia seems to be more active on the crown hair than elsewhere.
Regaine is the name of a minoxidil-based lotion that you rub into your scalp every day. It helps stabilise further hair loss but is not as potent as the hair loss tablets which act as DHT blockers. In some cases, it seems to stop working after about 2 years of using it.
Minoxidil is an old anti-hypertensive medication and works by increasing blood flow to the scalp.
Herbal DHT blocker
It is a derivative of desert plants with no known side effects and works with a slower action/effect and is given without a prescription.
